A broad critical and informed approach to international business management requires a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating critical understanding of strategy, marketing, financial and organisational factors. They all lie at the intersection where business strategy, processes and information combine and represent critical functions in the management of organisations to ensure that decisions, processes, and behaviours are consistent with corporate objectives and that strategies are related to performance. This Top-up degree will provide students with valuable insights on the main issues facing international businesses and management.

Accordingly, the subjects of strategic management, international marketing, organisation behaviour and accounting & finance are fundamental areas in the Top-up degree in International Business Management. The modules included in the course plan also handle topics such as business data analysis and sustainability.

Business Data Analysis

The aims of the module are to ensure that students:

  • Acquire a thorough understanding of the approaches, tools and techniques of academic research within a business discipline
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the research process and research methodology, and the ability to use relevant information sources effectively
  • Develop analytical and presentational skills such that they can write up their research study

Business and Sustainability

The module aims to enable students to:

  • Develop a critical understanding of current industry practice within corporate social responsibility influence and impact upon the planet, people and profit
  • Develop critical skills required to offer informed contributions to strategic decision making
  • Improve the delivery of sustainability targets in a cost-effective way alongside everyday business activities

Accounting and Finance

The module aims to enable students to:

  • Equip students with the financial tools required to understand a firm’s underlying economics and the main drivers of financial performance
  • Develop skills necessary to analyse the cash generating ability of a firm and critically assess the impact of economic events on the operating, financing and investing cash flows of a firm
  • Provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the analytical and financial tools used to assess the viability of major investment projects
  • Equip students with knowledge of the tools required to decide on the optimal use of limited resources to enhance the financial performance of a firm

International Marketing

This module aims to enable students to:

  • Develop a critical overview of the subject of international marketing through a combination of theory and application
  • Develop a critical understanding of international marketing concepts and international marketing skills which are essential for the success of organisations operating in increasingly global, challenging and changing markets
  • Develop an overview of the macro-environment of international business and economic development, that lays the basis for the use of big data, digital analytics, and global supply chain management
  • Develop a critical strategic overview of international marketing issues, an appreciation of strategic international marketing challenges including integrating theory and practice across a wide range of international business contexts

Organisational Behaviour and Leadership in an International Context

This module aims to enable students to:

  • Critically understand the antecedents and consequences of behaviour in organisations, with particular emphasis on the management and leadership processes
  • At an intellectual level, take a broad view of organisational behaviour within an international cultural context, by critically examining the links between historical, organisational psychology, organisational sociology and management ‘science’ factors as an aid to an understanding of people’s behaviour and experience of work in organisations
  • At a practical level, to critically examine current organisational practices in different international settings, such as, selection, motivation, team working, and change

Strategic Management

The module aims to enable students to:

  • Develop a critical understanding of the strategy process for organisations in a wide variety of international contexts
  • Critically evaluate the roles of leadership in organisational decision making and change
  • Develop critical skills required to offer informed contributions to strategic decision making
  • Devise creative solutions to multidisciplinary business problems

Dissertation

The module aims to:

  • Encourage students to develop expertise in a specific business and enterprise area, an confidence in designing and managing a long-term complex research project
  • Synthesise previous learning in the context of real-world management and explore and test at first-hand the value of theory to modern managers
